On 6 May 2019, PhD student Bùi Văn Bắc successfully defended the doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Zoology, University of Cologne, Germany.

The examination board consisted of:

Institute of Geography Education, University of Cologne

Prof. Dr. Michael Bonkowski

Examiner 1

Prof. Dr. Hartmut Arndt

Examiner 2

The thesis is titled "Dung beetles as sensitive indicators of land use change and quantification of their ecosystem services in northern and central Vietnam"

The main results:

- Successfully used a new approach to examine the effects of land use change on biodiversity, and the consequences for key ecosystem functions and services;

- Identified and described significant changes in the community attributes, structure and morphological traits of dung beetles along a land-use gradient in tropical, karst ecosystems in Vietnam;

- Quantified the diversity and ecosystem functions of dung beetles inhabiting karst ecosystems;

- Determined important indicator dung-beetle species of land-use types in Vietnam;

- Provided reviews of all worldwide known species of the genus Synapsis Bates, 1869 and all Vietnamese species of the genus Copris Geoffroy, 1762;

- Discovered and formally described four new dung-beetles species;

Some of the above results have been presented in publications or in reviewed manuscripts in international peer-reviewed journals such as Ecological Indicators, European journal of entomology, Acta Entomologica Musei Nationalis Pragae, Zootaxa…

The thesis was evaluated highly successful by the examination board. On the same day, Dr. Bùi Văn Bắc was awarded a doctoral degree for his dissertation.
