WORKSHOP ON: “10 YEARS IMPACT OF PAYMENT FOR FOREST ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES IN VIETNAM”.

On the morning of November 24, 2020, Vietnam National University of Forestry in collaboration with Vietnam Forest Protection and Development Fund, and Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) organized the workshop on: "10 years impact of payment for forest environmental services in Vietnam".

Attending the workshop were representatives of the universities, institutes, international organizations, donors, scientists, news agencies with more than 100 delegates.

Co-chaired of the workshop include:

-Leaders of Vietnam National University of Forestry: Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu - President, and Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Sam – Director of International Cooperation Division;

- Leader of Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR): Dr. Pham Thu Thuy – Director of CIFOR in Vietnam

Opening remarks at the Workshop, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu emphasized that the policy of Payment for forest environmental services is one of the ten outstanding achievements of the Vietnamese agriculture sector in general and the forestry sector in particular. The forest areas collecting the fees increased to 6.8 million hectares this year from nearly 1.4 million hectares in 2011, of which special-use forests make up 18.8 percent, protection forests 40.5 percent and production forests 40.7 percent.

The Workshop was divided into 2 sessions to discuss: Section 1: PFES impacts at the national level, Section 2: PFES impacts at the sub-national level include research results from 4 sites: Cat Tien National Park, Thua Thien Hue, Dak Lak, Son La.

The workshop also received many comments from the delegates for research reports in particular and payment policy for forest environmental services in general. Delegates appreciated the research results, the positive effects of the policy of payment for forest environmental services on the management and protection of forests and improved livelihoods for local people. Besides, delegates also give some limitations in implementing policies from practice.

This financial source has helped to ensure sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, job generation, sustainable livelihoods, and people's awareness improvement, according to Mr. Nguyen Chien Cuong, an official of the Viet Nam Forest Protection and Development Fund (VNFF). In the past 10 years, the total payment for forest environmental services reached VND16,758 billion, equivalent to 18.2 per cent of the total investment in the forestry sector.

Closing remarks at the Workshop, Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Sam would like to express his thanks and best wishes in the future to receive continuously the attention, cooperation, sharing and contributing professional opinions of scientists and organizations, individuals and donors in payment for forest environmental services in Vietnam.
