Conference on Sustainable Forest and Farm Development Associated with Rural Livelihoods in the Context of Climate Change

The conference is one of the important events towards the 60th anniversary of the university's establishment, with the aim of proposing solutions to develop sustainable forests and farms and improve people's livelihoods.

The conference was chaired by Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dien, President of VNUF, Mr. Hoang Tung, Deputy Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Vietnam Farmers' Union, and Mr. Nguyen Song Ha, Assistant Representative of FAO in Vietnam. The conference attracted the participation of more than 120 delegates from ministries, sectors, experts, scientists and delegates from 12 northern mountainous provinces as well as domestic and international organizations.

Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dien delivered the opening speech of the conference.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dien emphasized the strategic role of forest and farm development in the context of climate change and population growth. He affirmed that the conference was an opportunity for stakeholders to share knowledge, discuss sustainable livelihood development models and propose feasible solutions for the sector.

Mr. Nguyen Song Ha, Assistant Representative of FAO in Vietnam, gave a speech.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Song Ha, Assistant Representative of FAO in Vietnam, thanked the University for hosting this important conference. He emphasized the role of forests in ecosystem conservation and rural livelihood development, especially in the context of climate change. He highly appreciated the results of the FFF project implemented in both phases and suggested that the conference focus on discussions to maximize the results of the project.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Hoang Tung, Deputy Head of the Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Department, Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union, shared the losses of the provinces affected by Yagi typhoon, and introduced some important projects that the Vietnam Farmers' Union has been working with farmers, especially the important results of the FFF project phase II.

Under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Sam - Director of International Cooperation Division, VNUF, 5 important presentations from experts in the field were delivered:

1. Overview of the Forest and Farm Support Programme Phase II – Mr. Pham Tai Thang, FFF II Programme Coordinator, FAO presented on financial and technical support for rural communities dependent on forests in the context of climate change.

2. Developing the multi-use value of forest ecosystems in Vietnam – Mr. Tran Nho Dat, ​​Department of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared about current policies and orientations for developing the multi-use value of forests, including community and cooperative forest models.

3. National forest certification system and EUDR compliance platform – Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tiep, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Forest Certification Office, introduced the forest certification system in Vietnam and the importance of EUDR for sustainable forest product exports.

4. International experience in developing agroforestry – Ms. Tran Thi Mai Anh, representative of ICRAF Vietnam, shared international experiences in developing agroforestry models, helping to increase the ability to adapt to climate change and create more income for farmers.

5. Application of remote sensing technology in estimating forest carbon stocks – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Hoa, VNUF, presented the application of remote sensing technology in measuring and managing forest carbon stocks, to support greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.

Representatives of provinces and delegates attending the conference shared practical experiences in forest and farm development associated with local livelihoods.

In addition to the presentations, the conference also organized an exhibition of agricultural products and handicrafts from Lao Cai, Son La, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Hoa Binh and Bac Kan. 

The conference ended with many practical contributions and lessons learned, opening up opportunities for cooperation in research and technology transfer. Delegates expect that the conference will promote sustainable rural development, while improving people's lives, especially in the context of climate change and the impact of natural disasters.
